No HVAC Buddy currently doesn't have settings for type of unit or mode setting.  Perhaps an enhancement.

My understanding of the charge issues for an ASHP in heating mode:

1) For some manufacturers the subcooling target as well as the target tolerance can be quite different (higher) in heating mode.

2) Your measurements will be taken differently as the indoor coil now acts as the condenser. Instead of wet bulb you have to determine entering dry bulb at the return. Take liquid line temp at the liquid line leaving the indoor coil and take pressure at the service valves at the coil outside.

3) The calculation is still discharge saturation temp less liquid line temp

As far as "clear" that's easy to add and will be in the next update.

Thanks,

Kevin

Thanks for the suggestion!  Plugging in your examples:

A) "Show me all refrigerants and the corresponding temperature who's pressure is 340psig within 1psig"

Sorted by press, temp the results are a bit hard to follow:

Refrig   BubT      Press
FX-220   135.00   339.5
R-717   135.00   339.624
R-410A   101.48   340
R-404A   123.14   340
R-407C   126.45   340
R-245FA   270.00   340.014
R-410B   105.00   340.3
R-411A   145.00   340.5
R-409A   160      340.51
R-507A   125.00   340.804
R-134A   170.00   340.834
R-152A   180.00   341.254
R-507   125      341.41
R-411B   140.00   341.5
R-421A   140.00   341.50
R-422B   140.00   341.80

Change the sort to temp within the selected data looks (to me) a bit nicer:

Refrig   BubT      Press
R-410A   101.48   340
R-410B   105.00   340.3
R-404A   123.14   340
R-507   125      341.41
R-507A   125.00   340.804
R-407C   126.45   340
FX-220   135.00   339.5
R-717   135.00   339.624
R-411B   140.00   341.5
R-421A   140.00   341.50
R-422B   140.00   341.80
R-411A   145.00   340.5
R-409A   160      340.51
R-134A   170.00   340.834
R-152A   180.00   341.254
R-245FA   270.00   340.014

For that particular sort (or even the process in general) to work the tolerance you supply needs to be kept in a narrow range but not so tight a range as to exclude a refrigerant because your selection could not find a point on the curve.

I'll add it to the next release.  If it's okay I might send you a screenshot to make sure I understand.

Hello Stephen thanks for the input.

Yes my intention is to continue enhancing HVAC Buddy where it makes sense rather than adding new apps.  Especially paying attention to the "H" portion of the name.  Before I went any further with new stuff I decided it was time to improve the fundamentals and map a course to something that does more to improve work flow.  This begins with adding the ability to store on the phone the following:

Customers - Name, location, type
Units - Static information such as Manufacturer, Nameplate info
Measurements - Essentially what is currently recorded in HVAC Buddy but allow multiple samples, over time.  Down the road these would be tied to particular work orders.

The above items will be on the next release.   Over time these features are nice to have but won't be of much use unless you have the opportunity to get the information to places other than the iPhone.  A website counterpart will allow archival storage, access from a desktop, etc.  The challenge has been (and is) to add this capability without it getting in the way of the current simple calculator functionality or loading up the app with features people didn't expect or want when they bought the app.

As far as the "H" portion of the app and expansion for furnace / heat pump measurements - COP, avg COP, EER, etc. any suggestions you have are greatly appreciated.  Post them here or email me kburandt@gmail.com.

What is most important?  For instance, there are only a few missing values to derive EER.  Knowing EER could lead to future enhancements as a sales tool.  "EER is X based on (your current gps coordinates number of cooling degree days and average mw costs) $ per year if you buy a new unit payback is X years".  The latter part may be down the road as there are challenges making it not so USA-specific.

Dear Kevin,

I love PT buddy.  I have a feature request. That would be to allow some method to compare the different relationships of all the refrigerants. That is to say; "show me all refrigerants and the corresponding temperature who's pressure is 340psig" or the inverse "show me all refrigerants and the corresponding pressure who's temperature is 100 degrees Fahrenheit."  Probably in the initial query of this have an option for how much difference to take into account such as plus or minus x amount to what we are using to reference.  I am thinking this would be useful in scenarios where you are unsure of what refrigerant is in the system you are working with and could easily look it up.

Thank you,
Bryan

So I'm curious, I've been looking for an App that will allow me to record and check gas furnace measurement as well as heatpump specs. etc. I'd also like to know if such an app expansion to the existing app could be made as an update rather than a stand alone app which i would have to buy. I have not purchased the current app due to this limitation. Air conditioning measurements are very good but not the only thing which is in the HVAC name.
Thanks Stephen Rardon
